Privacy Policy
This policy covers both mydeenguide.com (this website) and the My Deen Guide mobile app for iOS and Android.
The short version
The app is local-first. Your reading position, bookmarks, collections, prayer records, downloaded content and settings live on your device. Prayer times are calculated on your device from your location; that location is not sent to us. This website sets no cookies and runs no advertising or tracking scripts.
Two things do involve a server, and both are optional: signing in to sync your data across devices, and taking part in the community and Ask a Mufti features.
What this website collects
Nothing that identifies you. There are no cookies, no advertising pixels, no session recording and no fingerprinting.
We use a cookieless analytics service that records aggregate page views and referrers. It does not set a cookie, does not build a profile across sites, and does not store an identifier that can single you out.
Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs (IP address, user agent, requested URL) for a short period for security and abuse prevention. We do not mine those logs, and we do not join them to anything else.
If you use the contact form, we receive the name, email address and message you type, so that we can reply. We keep correspondence only as long as it is useful for that reply and any follow-up, and we do not add you to a mailing list.
What the app collects
Without an account — nothing leaves your device except two things:
- If you enable prayer-time notifications, the app asks your operating system for location access. The coordinates are used on-device to compute times. They are not transmitted to us.
- If you choose to download optional content (recitation audio, extra translations, mushaf page images), your device fetches those files from a content host. That request reveals your IP address to the host, as any file download does.
With an account (optional), we store: your email address, your display name if you set one, and the data you have chosen to sync — bookmarks, collections, reading progress, prayer records and settings. This exists so that changing phones does not lose your place.
In the community and Ask a Mufti features (optional), we additionally store the content you post, questions you submit, and moderation records including reports you make or receive. Questions submitted to Ask a Mufti are read and answered by human scholars; they are never answered by an automated system.
What we never do
- We do not sell or rent personal data.
- We do not run third-party advertising networks.
- We do not build advertising profiles from your reading.
- We do not use your religious activity in the app for any purpose other than providing the features you asked for.
Children
The app is not directed at children under 13, and account creation is not intended for them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, export or delete the personal data we hold. You can exercise all of them by emailing privacy@mydeenguide.com.
Account deletion has its own page with step-by-step instructions, including how to do it from inside the app: see Delete your account and data.
Where data is stored
Account and community data is stored with our hosting and database providers. Where your data crosses a border, we rely on the standard contractual protections those providers offer.
Changes
If this policy changes materially, the date at the top changes and — for anything that affects what we collect — the app will tell you in-app rather than relying on you re-reading this page.
